Thinking spatially – theoretical foundations of spatial planning

Thinking spatially - A special feature of spatial planning? What does it actually mean to pursue the spatial characteristics, changes and interactions? What exactly does this „spatiality“ of planning mean and how is it reflected in different theoretical perspectives and approaches? This PhD seminar deals with the theoretical basics of spatial planning, especially the question of what it actually means to think and research spatially. Starting from a relational understanding of space, we will analyse and classify basic concepts of spatial planning such as space, place, scale or multi-levels. Based on this, we work on the foundation of our own scientific work and our own understandings of space and its consequences, e.g. in the own dissertation project.

The seminar is organized as a literature seminar, so there will be a lot of reading and discussion of the texts together. Apart from the introduction to the basics, the main aim is to think through the theoretical foundation of space in the participants' work, to substantiate it and develop it further. The seminar thus lives from the cooperation of the participants, is animated by the respective contributions and is, of course designed together. The perspective is primarily theoretical and all participants serve as sparring partners for their own thoughts. The seminar is considered an offer to deepen one's own knowledge and to actively participate in the debate of the professional community.
